Traineeships

Senex Energy partners with TAFE Queensland to run a Certificate III in Process Plant Operations traineeship program. This nationally recognised program helps to develop trainee’s skills in operating production equipment and opens up a range of possibilities in the natural gas industry and further study pathways.

At the end of the four-year program, trainees receive a technical qualification and the necessary skillset to be an operator at Senex.

Wherever possible, we look to hire and develop trainees locally to maximise the flow-on benefits that living and working locally can bring to the region.

Offering locally-based traineeships helps to boost our future talent pipeline and provide significant opportunities for eager and capable people living locally.

In addition to the formal training modules of the Certificate III in Process Plant Operations program, trainees are mentored and trained by competent Senex Supervisors and Operators.

  • Operations Manager Jason Schroder really values what trainees can bring to Senex.

“Trainees are keen to learn and bring a sense of enthusiasm and new perspective to the team,” Jason said.

“It’s a privilege to grow and develop people who will hopefully go on to build a career with Senex and continue to contribute to the vitality of the region.”

Meet trainee Matt Foster

Matt Foster has successfully completed his traineeship with Senex and is now a fully qualified Electrical and Instrumentation (E&I) Technician. Read how Senex has supported Matt to develop his skills on the job below.

When Senex was unable to successfully recruit local Production Operators for our Roma North and Atlas operations, Field Superintendent Paul Boland suggested that instead of looking for someone with all the skills, we look for a great person first – and then train them to do the job.

“We had tried online, local newspapers, agency support and word of mouth, to no avail. Creating a locally-based traineeship offered a solution where we could boost our future talent pipeline and provide a significant opportunity for someone in the local community,” said Paul.

Roma-local Matt Foster said he jumped at the trainee Production Operator opportunity when it came up in 2020.

“I had recently completed my electrical apprenticeship and was looking for a way to get back into the gas industry,” Matt said.

“It’s hard to advance your career in Roma as a domestic electrician. This role has enabled me to stay in Roma with my family while advancing my career.”

Matt completed his Certificate III in Process Plant Operations while working as a trainee Production Operator, and last year had the opportunity to take on the role of a fully-qualified E&I Technician with Senex.

“I’ve really enjoyed learning on the job with Senex and look forward to continuing to grow with the company as it grows,” Matt said.

Paul Boland said the trainee roles are critical to production at Senex and that he looks forward to welcoming more to the team.
